The 36-year-old singer became the parent of twin baby boys earlier this month, after fathering them through a surrogate mother. And according to biographer Kathleen Tracy - writer of Ricky Martin: Red-Hot and on the Rise! - it was the divorce of the singer’s own parents that left him determined to be a perfect father. Martin tells Tracy: "(My dad) wanted me to choose between him and my mother. How do you ask a child that?" A source tells the National Enquirer of his hopes for the future: "Ricky sees this as an opportunity to make things right in his life. He wants to be the kind of father for his boys that his own dad never was to him." And Martin has taken the first step to supporting his sons by stepping out of the limelight. A statement on his official website reads: "Ricky is elated to begin this new chapter in his life as a parent and will be spending the remainder of the year out of the public spotlight in order to spend time with his children."

The native Alabama joined a legion of celebrities at this week's historic Democratic National Convention, where he spoke of his hopes of following in the footsteps of Hollywood actor and now Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Barkley, a registered Independent voter, tells the New York Daily News: "I'm planning to run for governor of Alabama. I have to live there for seven years. I bought my house there last year. I have homes in Arizona and Pennsylvania, but Alabama needs more help."

Britain's own hit singing group Girls Aloud is going to recruit a new member as part of a new reality show, according to media reports. The all girl band was formed in 2002 as part of Television talent show Popstars: The Rivals. And now hit singers are looking to return to the reality show roots with their own series that is dedicated to finding a new singer, who will join the group for a special gig. A source tells British newspaper the Sunday Mirror, "The girls have never forgotten that reality TV gave them their first break. Now they want to give someone else the chance. The winner will get to perform with the group on stage during a one-off concert but the girls hope they’ll be able to discover a hidden talent who could join the band as a fully paid-up member. It makes sense for them to look for someone who can stand in if one of them can’t make a show."

OPRAH WINFREY SCHOOL TRIAL DELAYED

The trial of a former employee accused of abusing children at television talk show host Oprah Winfrey's all-girl academy in South Africa has been postponed until next October. Former dorm matron Tiny Virginia Makopo was arrested last October on 14 charges including assault, indecent assault and soliciting underage girls to perform indecent acts. She is accused of committing the crimes at Winfrey’s Henley-on-Klip Leadership Academy over a period of four months in 2007.The trial opened in Johannesburg last Tuesday, with Makopo entering a not guilty plea to all charges against her. However, on Friday, the judge at Sebokeng Magistrate Court ruled the trial will resume on October 22nd when testimony from the remaining victims will be heard.The delay has come as a blow to the prosecution, who had hoped the trial would be over this summer. State prosecutor Etienne Venter says, "I’m a bit sad. We were hoping to finish all six victims by now… We’re going to try and see if we can finish all six of them in those three days." If found guilty on all 14 charges, Makopo faces a minimum of 10 years in prison. She is currently free on bail.Winfrey co-founded the academy in 2006, and in late 2007 issued a heartfelt apology to the students who allegedly suffered at the hands of school officials.

Sports star Dennis Rodman has found himself in trouble with the law once again, after a car registration mix-up resulted in his vehicle being impounded. The retired sportsman’s luxury Mercedes S600 was taken away by police in West Hollywood this morning after the female driver was pulled over by cops. Officers claimed Rodman had failed to pay his registration for the last 18 months and have impounded the car until the star pays up, reports TMZ.com. However, Rodman insists he had no idea the bill had not been dealt with because he thought his old business manager had settled the debt.Rodman recently hit the headlines after being landed with a $400,000 tax bill, which he also blamed on his ex-employee.
